1. What is Degree Navigator?

Degree Navigator (DN) is a tool designed to allow students and advisors to view and plan academic progress. We encourage students, faculty, and staff to review degrees, options, and available features of the program. Please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for assistance if you have any questions.

2. How can I explore other majors and minors?

Go to the "Search" menu and select "Search Programs of Study." You may search by department name or department number. Please do not use quotes when searching.

3. How do I officially change/add a major or minor?

Please contact your college's or school's dean's office for information at http://nb.rutgers.edu/academics/schools-colleges.

4. What are the campus codes for the Degree Navigator program?

      • Camden - (CA)
      • Newark - (NK)
      • New Brunswick/Piscataway - (NB)

5. How do I search for a program or course within a specific campus?

You can do a New Brunswick/Piscataway-specific search by typing (NB) after the name. For example, to search history courses in New Brunswick/Piscataway, enter "history (NB)."

6. I am enrolled only in one school. Why does it show more than one program?

Degree Navigator divides your degree into two separate components:

      • General education requirements
      • Major and minor programs

Please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if your information is not correct and we'll work to resolve the problem.

7. Why do some of my transfer courses have a 99:999:999 course number?

Courses that do not have a Rutgers equivalent are given the course number 99:999:999.

8. What information is available in the "My Course List" section? What do all of the codes mean?

The "My Course List" in DN is essentially your transcript. Included on this page is a Special Codes Legend that will explain the codes.

Here is what is included:

Courses

  • Courses are listed in course number order, by semester, with the most recent semester at the top.
  • Each course number is a hyperlink; if you click on the course number, you will be shown the course title and the complete catalog description of that course at the time that you took it. You can also hover over the course number to show the course title.
  • Here’s a link to what the parts of a Rutgers course number mean: https://sasundergrad.rutgers.edu/degree-requirements/policies/courses
  • The number of credits is what you were registered for (for that course) in that semester.
  • Courses with the course code 99:999:999 are transfer courses that do not have an exact Rutgers equivalent. There are relatively few courses with this course code at this point (there were more when DN was first created); most have school-specific transfer course codes now, for example TR:T01:EC.

Grades

  • The grade listed is what the student earned in the course.
  • Here’s a link to the possible grades and what they meanhttp://catalogs.rutgers.edu/generated/nb-ug_current/pg1423.html
  • The grade column will say "current" for the current semester before grades are posted.
  • The grade of MG means "missing grade" – it appears when you do not have a grade entered onto a roster for a course after the semester has concluded. It also appears for students who completed a Rutgers Study Abroad program on the country-specific study abroad course (usually 01:959:###) once the individual courses taken on that study abroad appear with their grades.
  • The grade can also tell you what type of course the course is:
    • If there’s a letter grade, or a grade listed in the catalog link above, it’s a Rutgers course or a course taken through a Rutgers Study Abroad.
    • If the grade is TR, the course is a transfer course.
    • If the grade is AP, the course was applied based on an Advanced Placement test result.
    • If the grade is PR, the course was applied based on a proficiency test result.
    • If the grade is PL, the "course" is actually a placement test result. If you click on the placement test code, you will find out what course(s) you are eligible to take in math, English, foreign language, or chemistry. Placement test results, if you have them, will always be at the bottom of the "My Course List".

Special Codes

  • Several different types of information appear in the Special Codes column.
  • If the course was taken at Rutgers, the code is a Credit Prefix. Here’s a link to what the different prefixes mean: http://catalogs.rutgers.edu/generated/nb-ug_current/pg1425.html
  • If the course is a transfer course, the special code will tell you the title of the course at the other institution.
  • If the course is from an AP test result, the special code will be AP.
  • If the course is a placement test result, the special code will be PL.
  • If the course is from a proficiency test, the special code will be PR.

If you have any questions about additional codes not mentioned here, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

9. What does "reuse" mean?

"Reuse" means that courses from certain categories can overlap with other categories.

10. How do my planned courses and current courses factor into completing my requirements?

The "My Planned Courses" tool permits you to assess the impact of future course work on your graduation requirements. Degree Navigator will include planned courses in your degree audit and show you which degree requirements they may fulfill. Planned courses are denoted with a yellow dot in the audits.

Please note: selecting a planned course does NOT automatically register you for the course, nor does Degree Navigator know whether or not the course will be offered in the semester you select. "My Planned Courses" should be used as a planning tool only in conjunction with the online Schedule of Classes.

11. When I search for courses, why are some listed with capital letters and missing course descriptions?

There are two types of courses represented by UPPER CASE letters:

      • Courses that are no longer being offered
      • Courses that are so new to Rutgers that they have not yet been updated in Degree Navigator

Check the Schedule of Classes to see if the course is available.

12. I declared a major. Why isn't it showing up in Degree Navigator?

Please contact your college's or school's dean's office at http://nb.rutgers.edu/academics/schools-colleges.

13. Why isn't the program using the right courses to fulfill my requirements?

Degree Navigator will automatically use the courses with the best grades to fulfill requirements. In some cases, courses that you are currently taking may be used to fulfill a requirement. If you have questions about a particular course, please contact your academic department at http://nb.rutgers.edu/academics/academic-departments-programs.

14. What should I do if I think a requirement is wrong?
