Degree Navigator Exceptions
Degree Navigator exceptions are used to apply an approved adjustment to an individual student’s program requirements. An exception affects the student record where it is entered and does not change the requirements for other students in the same program.
Who Can Enter Exceptions?
Only advisors with approved exception access for the applicable academic program should enter Degree Navigator exceptions. Access is assigned according to departmental responsibilities.
When an Exception May Be Appropriate
An exception may be appropriate when an authorized academic decision applies to an individual student, such as allowing a specific course to satisfy a requirement or adjusting how approved coursework is applied to the audit.
Exceptions Are Not Program Changes
Exceptions should not be used to permanently change program requirements for an entire student population. Changes to the requirements of a major, minor, certificate, or other program must follow the appropriate curriculum approval process and, once approved, be programmed into Degree Navigator through the established update process.
Common Exception Types
- Requirement exceptions
- Category exceptions
- Course adjustments
- Credit adjustments
Detailed instructions for selecting and entering the appropriate exception are provided in the Degree Navigator Departmental Advisor Training.
Documenting Exceptions in Navigate360
Approved Degree Navigator exceptions should also be documented in Navigate360 so the academic decision and supporting information are available in the student’s advising record. Review the Navigate360 Documentation training for the expected documentation process.
Training
Advisors with exception access should complete the six Degree Navigator Departmental Advisor Training videos and use the Degree Navigator Departmental Advisor Training Guide as the accompanying reference.
